About the exhibition:
A thoughtful composition with a bit of madness
Of course nothing is abstract. The title of the exhibition by Agata Czeremuszkin-Chrut is only seemingly a provocation. Any non-performing composition has its origin in realism. Art is set in realism. Deep. These are its roots. When looking at the paintings of Agata, visitors to the gallery ask me what the artist meant and they do it often, first of all I suggest that they unlock the imagination and look for their own associations and connotations. Valuable art is one that establishes an endless dialogue with the viewer, is able to persevere in this dialogue, often in conversation for many years. I have no doubt that although Agata's work may not be overly understood, we can always enter into a wise discussion with her. On what topic? For any that suit the viewer. However, the artist suggests several artistic clues that he would like to talk about most with his painting.
Agata Czeremuszkin-Chrut always contains a human figure in her paintings. Man is the most important for her, which does not mean that the subject of the work concerns the body directly. Sometimes this happens as in the cycle "Meat and geometry", in which the author was interested in the biology and exuberance of a living organism and the struggle of man with the limiting physicality. Recent works are more transcendental and relate to the body in its aspect of transience, degradation, destruction.
The impulse to create most of the works presented at the exhibition was a meeting with the timeless work of classical Greek artists. The inspiration of the "Fragments" series comes from a trip to Athens and contemplation of the local art collections, primarily sculpture. Based on this inspiration, the author solves two separate problems. One of them is the attitude towards the degradation of the body, including the one enchanted in the work of art, enclosed in a timeless form, so that it is everlasting and "preserves life" against the challenges of death. However, this fails because time is as relentless for people as for sculptures. The breakup is irreversible, nothing can stop him. In this case, Agata Czeremuszkin-Chrut's painting is not a struggle against the passing of time, but an elegy that praises the elegance of slow destruction.
The second challenge for the artist was to "rewrite" three-dimensional, sculptural forms into a flat painting story, resulting in a condensed form, but in its clarity equally relevant. Fractions of sculptures are affected by deformation and distortion, in which the artist finds beauty, often unobvious or tragic. There is an element of monumentalism and pathos in her works that accompanies us in discovering the beauty of ancient art. Even if at first it seems that the painter's inspiration is surprising, after a while we understand the message very thoroughly and feel the emanation of power flowing from the created images.
The ancient sculpture was polychrome into contrasting, vivid colors. It is worth remembering, because Agata's painting is as much a color as a form. Another artist's cycle - "Baroque", also embedded in the canon of art history, emanates color in an equally expressive way. Agata Czeremuszkin-Chrut's color solutions cannot be ignored. The author, within a specific work, moves in limited color ranges, usually on the basis of contrast between form and background. Color often determines our attitude towards a single canvas, because consciously used, with great certainty and strength, it defines the message that the artist has to convey. Frequent dissonant combinations and the color used as a counterpoint give the works monumentalism and unusual dynamics. I often have the impression that Agata's painting is created at the intersection of incredibly subtle and brutally expressive solutions that overwhelm with the power of communication.
I have high requirements for abstract painting. Abstraction is probably the most difficult of painting forms. It must be very well thought out. Abstract compositions only seemingly are an emanation of creative freedom. A well-painted abstract image is the result of a thoughtful composition, a confidently constructed structure and a deliberately imposed layer of improvisation, and maybe even madness. Such a composition always has its own theme and is an important message, although each of us can pick it up slightly differently.
